Our reality is what other people think we say. ​I invite you to be your own best observer and notice others’ reactions to your communications and then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Theodore Roosevelt reminds us that, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, … who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

I encourage you to GET IN YOUR ARENA. And if I can help, you know I enthusiastically, diplomatically, strategically and tactically will help. Life and work can be messy, hard, unwanted, and complicated at moments but it does not need to stay that way.

How do we get better and is it worth it? (Are you still reading?)

It takes more than just ourselves even for the super overachieving, independent and accomplished. Making it on your own is limited – you don’t recognize your limitations or you don’t know how to fix them. So you stop improving. Surgeon, Public Health Professor, and Author Atul Gawande encourages us each in his Ted Talk, to open our minds and egos.

“Great coaches are your external eyes and ears providing a more accurate picture of your reality. They are recognizing the fundamentals, breaking your actions down and helping you build them back up again. It’s not how good you are now; it’s how good you’re going to be that really matters.”

Make 2024 the year you release yourself from your egos, your fear of failure or the unknown (hey Teddy said Get in the Arena!) or that pesky imposter syndrome. In fact, a Stanford Business School study reported that executive coaching had a 5.7x ROI.

In the words of Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
